Central nervous system – the part of the nervous system that includes the brain and the spinal cord.

  • The spinal column consists of a long bundle of nerves covered by 24 small movable bones called vertebrae which are located from the base of the skull to the pelvis.
  • Between each vertebrae in the spine are discs (white colored) which act as shock absorbers between adjacent vertebrae.
  • The discs also hold the vertebrae together and are cartilaginous joints which allow for mobility in the spine.
  • Nerves exit through small openings in between the vertebrae and lead out to the various parts of the body.
  • The brain sends messages to and from the body via the spinal column and the peripheral nervous system and out toward every organ and tissue.
  • When any of the vertebrae in the spine are out of alignment, the body’s messaging system is compromised.
  • This can result in pain and can also contribute to a wide range of health problems.
  • Misaligned vertebrae are called subluxations.
  • One of the primary roles of the chiropractor is to perform adjustments to the misaligned vertebrae, so they line up properly.
  • The chiropractor uses his or her hands (or a small instrument) to apply a controlled, sudden force in a specific direction to release (and line up) the misaligned vertebrae.
